Rebecca Stott - The Coral Thief and Other Tales From The History of Science.

Rebecca Stott has a keen interest in the development of scientific ideas. She has researched the history of Darwin’s work on barnacle  and Newton’s links with the alchemists. She has written two novels which explore the history of science, Ghost walk and the Coral Thief. 


The Coral Thief is published in the new year and is the book at bedtime on BBC radio 4 over January. Rebecca will discuss the way that scientific ideas develop and look at the early evolutionists in Paris, using her novels as a platform to do so.

The Natural World as Spectacle - Hugh Pearson

Hugh Pearson is a program producer with the BBC’s natural History Film Unit.  He will discuss the complexities of making programs that bring the vast panoramas of the biosphere into our living rooms. He will examine the many choices program makers are faced with and talk about the financial drivers that exert powerful pressures on the nature and content of these programs.



He has worked on many programs including Blue Planet and Nature Great Events. He is currently working on a series devoted to the wildlife of the African continent.

Tristram Hunt: "The Frock-Coated Communist"

BBC historian Tristram Hunt will be visiting the University of Plymouth on the 16th March to give insite to his new title: "The Frock-coated Communist" a biography of the life of Freidrich Engels, co-writer of the Communist Manifesto and forgotten father of Marxism. His detailed account sheds light upon the exceptional, and now almost forgotten,  life of one of the most influencial philosophers of modern history.
Pre-release copies of the books are available in store now, and will be on sale at the event (priced at £10.99), where Tristram will kindly be signing and dedicating copies.

The Rt Hon Lord Owen CH FRCP on his new title: In Sickness and in Power;

The course of world history has been critically shaped by the physical and mental illnesses of heads of state, sometimes in the public eye but usually in secrecy. Long fascinated with the inter-relationship between politics and medicine, Lord Owen gives us an insight to his unique study of illness in Heads of Government during the last 100 years and the influence of their medical advisers. Before entering politics, David Owen studied medicine at Cambridge, did his clinical training at St Thomas's Hospital and qualified as a doctor in 1962.

Following his presentation Lord Owen will take questions from the audience
